WW2 Wooden Personal Effects Memorial Storage Box

I'm not really sure what this small WW2 Wooden Personal Effects Memorial Storage Box was originally made for or when, however, it was allegedly used to return a husband's personal effects to his wife when he paid the ultimate sacrifice during WW2. Unfortunately, we have no information on the deceased or the original contents.

It has the look of a small military campaign chest so it could date earlier than WW2. Could it have been used as a card index filing box or for small munitions?

Approximate Size:-

  • External (WHD): 23 x 12.3 x 17.4 cm
  • Internal  (WHD): 20.3 x 9.1 x 14 cm
    Beautifully made case comprising:-
    • Red paint coated steel pull handle labelled 246B50004
    • Oak wood with jointed corners
    • Steel cap reinforced corners (originally red coated)
    • Internal Military canvas strap connecting the lid to the side of the box
    • Unusual clasp which you press down to open
    • Metal surround with open end to allow for a card insert inside the lid
    • Handwritten numbers inside the case including 80504
    • The base was probably originally covered in cork to prevent surface scratching

It is not without imperfections including marks and surface blemishes on the surface, and staining/marks on the inside. However, this adds to its character.

A very poignant little box that just had to be rescued for posterity...
